Dr. Nancy D. Joyner, Dean and Executive Director -
Dr. Nancy D. Joyner has been Dean and Executive Director of the Lutheran College Washington Semester since 1991, having been the first and only Dean in the history of the program. In that time, the program has grown from a one semester only program, conducted by a faculty member on sabbatical from one of the participating colleges, to a full program in the fall and spring semesters and a residential internship program in the summer.
Dr. Joyner is a native of New Orleans, LA. She earned her doctorate degree from Florida State University and did post doctorate studies at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Virginia. Dr. Joyner previously served as Dean of Continuing Education at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She is a former state president of the Virginia American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a national vice president of AAUW.
Dr. Joyner was married to the late Dr. Christopher C. Joyner who taught in the LCWS program for 21 years. A memorial award to an outstanding LCWS student has been named in his honor.
Laura M. Groth, Director of Internships
Ms. Laura Groth is originally from Valparaiso, Indiana and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Law and Humanities and a master’s degree in international commerce and policy from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. She is an alumna of the spring 2008 Lutheran College Washington Semester class and interned with Congressman Peter J. Visclosky while studying in D.C. After graduation, Ms. Groth stayed at Valparaiso University as the Associate Director of Student Services and Support in the Valparaiso Graduate School where she began her career working with students.
As Director of Internships Ms. Groth is responsible for placing students with internships, maintaining relationships with employers, organizing events and field trips, housing and class assignments, as well as coordinating other student related activities.
Douglas T. Stewart, Operations Manager
Mr. Douglas Stewart was born and raised in Hickory, NC and moved to Washington, D.C. in April of 2000 when he began working for LCWS. As the operations manager Mr. Stewart is responsible for the maintenance and renovation of the 13 student condos, handles all the IT needs, manages print and social media marketing including the LCWS website, as well as various other projects that develop on a daily basis.
Mr. Stewart received his Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Lenoir-Rhyne College, now known as Lenoir-Rhyne University, and worked for both the Lenoir-Rhynian school paper and the student run television show, AfterHours. Also while attending Lenoir-Rhyne, he participated as the assistant women’s soccer coach for two years. Mr. Stewart has held a variety of positions including working as a radio on-air personality, computer network salesman and retail sales manager. In the spring of 2012, Mr. Stewart earned a certification in web design from Northern Virginia Community College.
Mr. Stewart is an avid sports fan who likes to read, try to cook, watch movies, and is a bit of an amateur photographer. He is also involved with charity bicycle rides raising money for the American Diabetes Association, Crohn’s Disease, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
